How to Stay Afloat After a Social Media Fail
Social media sites over the last year have been a hot bed for disaster. Numerous people and organizations, from Anthony Weiner to Chrysler, have all suffered from a battered or ruined reputation after a few poor Tweets went out over thousands of mobile broadband connections. While we would all like to think that ourselves and our businesses would never be silly enough to do something like post a picture of yourself in boxers, things happen – and they can ruin your reputation in an instant.
If you or your company become the victims of a Social Media Fail, stay calm. There are a few things you can do to keep yourself from a ruining your reputation for life and from going out of business:
1. Figure Out the Type of Failure You Just Endured
Figuring out what kind of social media faux pas you have done will help you combat the repercussions. There are five distinct Social Media Fails, and each requires a different type of attention:
-The Offensive Comment: Did you or someone representing your company say something that was so off-the-cuff that everyone cringed as soon as it was said? This is the offensive comment, and can be one of the most scathing Social Media Fails if not attended to immediately.
-Poor Judgment Call: Did someone in your company just give their opinion about an event you’re sponsoring, such as “Hosting the boring Special Olympics. Would rather be drinking and watching the NFL”? This is the Poor Judgement Call – where someone lets their opinion get the best of them. Akin to the Offensive Comment, this type of Social Media Fail can quickly ruin a rep if not dealt with quickly.
